Sold Out
Established in memory of Elizabeth Schmerling, who graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture.
This spring, Liz’s family and friends will raffle a handmade quilt to assist the scholarship in its mission to support talented architecture students.
About Liz
Liz was a beautiful, intelligent and talented young woman. Her smile was pure sunshine. Liz worked hard and excelled in her studies, while helping others study and understand the field she so loved. She continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania looking to earn Master’s Degrees in both architecture and landscape architecture.
Shortly after beginning her graduate studies, Liz was diagnosed with brain cancer. For nineteen months, while courageously pursuing treatment, she stayed focused on architecture while working part time at Astorino Associates in Pittsburgh. Liz died on April 26, 2005. Her parents and brother chose to honor her memory by establishing an endowed scholarship at Washington University.
The Scholarship
The Elizabeth S. Schmerling Endowed Scholarship is a prestigious award that provides financial support for talented rising seniors who are on track to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.
The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more recipients. Selection is determined by a committee of four faculty based on superior academic performance and scholarship, innovative thought and approaches to the science and art of architecture, and a commitment to the study and understanding of architecture that serves as an inspiration to professors and peers alike.
The quilt was made by the mother of one of Liz’s fellow architecture students from Washington University. It is of the Stairway pattern, featuring Compliments and Flowers of the Sun by South Sea Imports with accents of yellow and orange. The backing fabric is Supporting Cast by Northcott Studios and has an embroidered tag commemorating the scholarship. The quilt measures 53″×66″ (throw or lap size).
The winner will be notified via email, then posted on this site. All proceeds will be donated to the scholarship.
